Alisa Looney
Metal Sculptor and Enamelist
Alisa Looney shapes and fabricates metal into open, fluid form, portraying movement and the expression of life.
Original sculptures, wall reliefs and jewelry are designed, cut, ground, shaped and welded from sheets of steel, stainless, bronze or copper. She may finish the metal in its natural color, or embellish the surface with colorful layers of glass enamel. Detailed glass images are fused to the metal surface by adding several layers drawing and painting enamels, and kiln-firing each layer to a lustrous finish.
Weekly movement and daily drawings inform Alisa’s work. Sketching and documenting while dancing, on hikes, paddles and skis throughout the seasons, she looks for signs of connection and movement … noticing space between bodies, seedlings sprouting through lava rock, clear water flowing, or fungi fruiting from the hidden mycelium network. Her intention is to inspire the connection and care of our planet and each other.
Best known for her award winning outdoor sculptures, Alisa Looney has exhibited in the U.S. and Canada. Her work is in a multitude of private and public collections, including Maryhill Museum of Art in WA, and several cities in the Northwest United States. Her enamel sculptures have exhibited in The Enamelist Society’s International Biennial Exhibitions, and have been published in GRAINS OF GLASS, A global community of Enamel Artists, and The Art of Fine Enameling, Second Ed. Alisa has taught enameling at the Carpenter Art Enamel Foundation, and online with Silvera Jewelry School and Pocosin Arts.
She fell in love with metal arts as a silver smith in her early years, received her BFA from Boise State University in 1983 and began welding in 1998. Alisa returned to Idaho in 2010 to study enameling with John Killmaster. This allowed her to merge metal sculpture and narrative imagery into her most magical work to date.
Alisa and her husband, woodblock printer Wade Womack, own River Art Adventures in Bend, Oregon, where they each maintain an independent studio practice, contract commissions for private and public placement, and enjoy teaching their respective mediums.
